YIN & YANG
//YIN & YANG// Yin and Yang (pronounced "yong" like "gong") is the foundation of diagnosis and treatment in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). There are four main aspects of the Yin and Yang relationship:
1) The Opposition of Yin & Yang
They always exist at opposite ends of a cycle of forms of matter. Nothing in the world escapes this opposition. It is this very contradiction that is the driving force for change and development. However nothing in the world is totally Yin or totally Yang. Everything contains a seed of its opposite. This opposition is also relative. For example, cold is Yin and hot is Yang so we might say that the climate in Mexico is Yang in relation to that of Canada but Yin in relation to that of Australia.
2) The Interdependence of Yin & Yang
One cannot exist without the other. They depend on each other. Day cannot come without night and vice versa. There cannot be activity without rest, energy without matter or contraction without expansion.
3) Mutual Consumption of Yin & Yang
Levels of Yin and Yang are always changing. Normally this is a harmoninous change but when they are out of balance too much of one can weaken the other.
4) The Inter-transformation of Yin & Yang
One can change into the other, but it is not a random event, happening only when the time is right. For example Spring only comes when Winter is finished.
